Help me give my students science fiction titles that will add much needed books to an area of the library with limited selections!

My Students

The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create, and take risks in their learning.

The mission of our school is to foster learning experiences which allow students to develop into creative, resourceful and inventive thinkers who learn through play each day!

My Project

Science Fiction titles are becoming ever increasingly popular as a genre, and so many of the titles in this area of the collection are outdated and unappealing. The characters are uninteresting, and the plots feature adventures which are, in the words of students browsing them, "boring and old!"

Science Fiction is a genre that needs updating, to reflect advances in science and incorporate characters that students find relevant and engaging.

After weeding this area of the collection it became clear additional titles that students will be excited to check out are greatly needed. Science Fiction appeals to students who may not otherwise enjoy fiction titles - those that enjoy non-fiction, and the titles in this grant, such as "Jacob Wonderbar" and "Last Kids on Earth" will add some engaging titles that students can enjoy for years to come!
