Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students work hard and I yearn to help them love school. Many come from families who do not have a lot of education in their backgrounds so my students can teach their families.
I love their willingness to try almost anything with no fear!
They are inquisitive, eager, and ready to learn. Our area is 85% poverty so they are not exposed to the idea that they can do or be whatever they want. I try to give them these options throughout the year by using the core curriculum but bringing in the arts and sciences as much as possible.
My Project
Having a microscope to view slides of plants or animal cells gives the student a birds eye view into the invisible or microscopic world that surrounds them everyday but they don't really see. Taking a leaf from a plant and studying it and writing about it in their plant journal is fun and interesting. Seeing the cells under a microscope so they are able to realize what they are holding in their hands is so much more complicated.
It is one thing to tell a student or show a video of what a plant is, but to be able to look through a microscope and actually see how a plant is built, and to understand how complicated even the simplest organism is can be mind blowing!
After looking at plants we will then bring in pond, lake, stream, ocean and/or river waters to study on our own slides we will make ourselves and then look at through the microscope also opens up a world they have never seen or probably even though was right there as they waded through a stream or played on the beach. This is where the minds of our young students are opened up to the possibility of pursuing a future science degree! Opening the eyes and minds of my students is one of the most important parts of teaching, letting them see the endless possibilities of what their futures may hold.
