This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our middle school has a Visual Impairment unit with students who are blind or have limited vision. I am asking for materials that can be used for several projects. First, so that my 3D print club students can make tools to help the new incoming 6th graders next year to "see the school" by making tactile maps. Secondly so that we can teach our VI students to use the 3D pens to draw and diagram in class to be able to more engage in learning.

Students, both sighted and visually impaired will use 3D print pens to make tactile diagrams allowing everyone access to learning and understanding each other.

Students will learn compassion by interviewing and working with our visually impaired students. Then they will learn about their needs and how they navigate the world. We will measure our success by having students learn what they use about visual impairment to create learning tools for other students including maps, diagrams or other touchable models. Then they can get feedback from the students using them.

Our visually impaired students will learn to use 3D pens so they can immediately feel what they are drawing. The plastic cools immediately letting students feel exactly what they are drawing or diagramming.

We want to work to translate diagrams into 3D to help accommodate students in class, and to utilize our students to problem solve this so they can also become more compassionate citizens. It is important to me to teach students to recognize the needs and differences of others and make every environment as inclusive as possible.
