Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach upper elementary special education to some amazing students. Each student has learning differences that affect their progress in their general education classroom. However, many have developed different talents, or "super powers" that make them vital members of the classroom.

Some have amazing math skills, one in particular can break down multi step equations and solve them quickly, but struggles to read basic story problems.

Another student can spell three syllable words for his peers, but then needs a little help remembering the purpose of his story. I have yet another student who excels in any physical activity he attempts, but has a hard time navigating the stillness and sustained attention so often needed within the classroom.

My students have differing skills and need specific tools to help them reach their goals in the general education classroom and beyond.

My Project

School can be a difficult place for neuro-diverse students. With how schools have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, this difficulty has been magnified. Despite these difficulties, students continue to prove themselves resilient.

All students want to be successful, and with this project, we can give them the tools they need to achieve this success.

With the sight word resources in this project, students will be given tools to help fill gaps in their reading skills. These gaps were formed in 2020 when my students were in 2nd and 3rd grade, and missing critical reading instruction due to school dismissal, distance learning, and many other factors outside their control. 80% of my 3- 5tgrade students are reading at or below a second grade level. As well as explicit instruction, these resources will be supplemented with activities targeting their specific needs. Those with sight word specific goals on their IEPS will be able to practice using the readers and bingo. For students struggling with phonics and word families, they will use the magnets to make word families independently. My students have had enough setbacks in their education. Providing these supplies encourages them to keep working towards their reading goals.

The resources involved in this project are designed to not only help kids fill in gaps in their reading, but to be given physical tools to help build self-confidence. Through flexible seating, students can have a safe way to focus excess physical energy, allowing them to focus their minds on academic tasks. When students have choices granted by teachers, even one as simple as picking the chair they will sit in, they are empowered by trust given by me. When they know the teacher trusts them, they are given permission to trust themselves.
