Seeing Science: Binoculars for Student Birdwatchers

My Project

I teach Biology to multilingual learners, and my students bring a wide range of languages, cultures, experiences, and perspectives to our classroom. They are innately curious, resilient, and eager to connect what they learn in biology to the world around them, but sometimes traditional instructional methods can inhibit their learning. My students thrive best when they can learn by doing and investigating real-world questions. I love seeing students who may not always feel confident in a traditional classroom become excited when they realize they can think and work like scientists.

This project will give my students the opportunity to use a class set of binoculars to observe birds and other wildlife on our school campus and in our local community.

Students in my classroom already keep weekly nature journals, where they observe, sketch, write, ask questions, and reflect on the living world around them. A class set of binoculars will make these experiences even more meaningful by allowing students to observe and learn about local wildlife. Students will use their observations to practice concepts such as ecology, adaptation, biodiversity, and scientific observation while collecting authentic data about the environment on and around our campus.

These experiences will also strengthen my students’ literacy skills. Because my students are multilingual learners, nature journaling provides an authentic reason to read, write, describe, discuss, and communicate scientific ideas. Students will build vocabulary and confidence as they put their observations into words, support their ideas with evidence, and communicate their thinking to others. Most importantly, I want my students to see that science is not just something found in a textbook or laboratory—it is happening all around them. These binoculars will help my students become careful observers, confident communicators, and scientists who feel connected to the place they call home.
