Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to our classroom. When you enter my classroom, you will see an array of color - from the home-made motivational words, to the paintings, to the chicken wire frame filled with quotes from various students. The room is dimmed with multiple thrift store lamps and smells like pumpkin, apple and cinnamon. My students deserve to be in a comfy, safe-to-share, classroom that is often their oasis from home.
My students are hungry to learn and see themselves within the pages of culturally diverse books.
They do not identify well with books written by old, white dead mean written hundreds of years ago! They want real-life. They want realistic writing that they can relate to in a personal way.
My Project
Good morning!
"Miss, Miss, did the books come yet?"
"Not yet, but any day now!"
"Oh, I can't wait to read some new books! I especially like the poetry books that everyone's talking about!"
"Why do you like poetry?"
"I loves me some poetry because it's like the author is writing about my thoughts and feelings. It's strange how the author can know what I'm going through, but it's like they describe it perfect. And then when I really think about it, I realize that I'm not all alone because the author is selling so many books to people just like me."
My students will read these books to build knowledge, vocabulary and higher level thinking skills. They will process information verbally and written and will discuss topics as a class. Often, these diverse books open up "teachable moments" in which students share about their lives. Other students nod their heads in agreement because they can relate as well.
