My students are yearning for "The Hate U Give" books because they have dealt with so many internal conflicts in their short lives. My students can't wait to read about Starr and watch her navigate two worlds at once - her rundown neighborhood where most everyone struggles within a cycle of poverty and her prep school where poverty is not an issue, but neither is empathy for people of color who work hard to make ends meet. Starr looks like people in her neighborhood, but strives to be like students in her prep school. My students will connect to this book because it has characters and issues that they will be able to identify with. A contemporary classic with social justice issues is just what my students need in order to connect with literature.
