Seeing Our Way to Success

My Students

B.B. King once said, "The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." This is what guides my students each day as they explore and discover in the world of fifth grade. I wish to give them the opportunity to see and experience more each day with an LCD projector.

I teach in an urban district in Massachusets in a Title I school which means that most of the students, about 93%, receive free or reduced lunch and after school tutoring to try to reach grade level benchmarks.

It is a very small school of just 210 students, but it is a hidden gem amidst a concrete jungle. The students range from K2 to fifth grade, which is the grade that I teach. My students represent a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, mostly Black and Hispanic, and many of them are first generation Americans. The students are kind, generous and independent because many have to care for themselves and their siblings as their parents struggle to work two or more jobs. They are intelligent, brave, and they have goals. Many of the students aspire to be the first in their family to complete high school and go to college. They have a lot on their minds, especially at just 11 years old, and my students are ready to go out in the world and work hard.

My Project

My students need an LCD projector to access materials online or on the computer so that the whole class can see and learn from the images. The use of an LCD projector would allow my students, most of whom do not have computers, to be able to access materials on a computer and online for learning purposes. Currently, we do not have any computers in our classroom or Computer Class. Having an LCD projector would allow us to explore a whole new avenue of learning. Some of the many things that the LCD projector would be used for include seeing video clips, pictures, and PowerPoints to enhance the lessons. We may discover Antarctica during our unit on the book, "Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World.". Or, we might analyze 3-D objects during our math unit, "Shapes and Designs". Finally, we may take a journey from Spain to North America during our Social Studies units on the explorers. There is an endless amount of lessons and activities that we do that would be enhanced by the addition of an LCD projector!

Donations to this request will be huge steps towards an amazing opportunity for my students.

An LCD projector will have a huge impact on their learning, especially for those who need a visual support, and I believe that it will help to inspire my students to go out into our beautiful world and see more of what life has to offer. This gift would provide them the chance to go beyond the city limits, which many of them do not get to do.
