I teach in an urban district in Massachusets in a Title I school which means that most of the students, about 93%, receive free or reduced lunch and after school tutoring to try to reach grade level benchmarks. It is a very small school of just 210 students, but it is a hidden gem amidst a concrete jungle. The students range from K2 to fifth grade, which is the grade that I teach. My students represent a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, mostly Black and Hispanic, and many of them are first generation Americans. The students are kind, generous and independent because many have to care for themselves and their siblings as their parents struggle to work two or more jobs. They are intelligent, brave, and they have goals. Many of the students aspire to be the first in their family to complete high school and go to college. They have a lot on their minds, especially at just 11 years old, and my students are ready to go out in the world and work hard.
