Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a 6th grade teacher in a very low income neighborhood where all of my students come into my classroom at least 2-3 grade levels below where they are supposed to be. Most of them have experienced only failure their entire school-going lives and they rarely see their brilliance, even when it's right there in front of my eyes. And it is- every single day a student amazes me with their curiosity, their astuteness, their generosity; They just aren't the ones to see it. My students are smart, they just haven't been told yet. It's my job to not only tell them, but to get them to believe it. Inspiring enough confidence in my students for them to learn grade level concepts is at least half of my job. Getting them to realize how incredible and smart they are is no easy task. Creating a classroom environment that they can take ownership of and want to improve- that takes my students who are behind on basic skills, and transforms them into true scholars. In order to enable my students to see their own victories, I need to make sure that they have all of the supplies they need to accomplish their goals, and see them realized in front of them every day. I'm requesting some basic classroom supplies that will help students better physically envision their goals, and supplies that will let us display how much we learn as a class. While these things seem small, they will go a long way in helping my students feel successful, and thus, be successful. You can give my students basic tools that they cannot afford for themselves, and with these tools they will be one step closer to realizing their brilliance and capturing their success.
