Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I teach all come from inner-city, low-income households. It is a self-contained, special education classroom, serving students with significant emotional and behavioral concerns. All of my students have experienced trauma, which makes learning a challenge.

The students that come to my classroom are from many different schools and are all in my classroom for 3 years.

In the time they spend with me, they develop socially, emotionally, developmentally, and academically. The hope is to stabilize these children so that they can be integrated into the regular education system eventually. Special education is always the last place money goes in the schools, and that is one of the reasons I am asking for your help. Also, these students are extremely challenging to engage in learning due to the trauma in their own lives. Having these special tools to bring learning to life would help engage them in a way they have not been exposed to yet. I want to provide them with technology to excite them and widen their educational experience. Due to family situations, I am not able to post a picture of the children in my room as it is confidential.

My Project

Please help us bring my students into the 21st century with an ELMO. My classroom is a multi-level sub-seperate special education classroom serving children who have complex learning issues such as ADHD, behavioral and emotional challenges, childhood trauma, and various learning disabilities. This makes teaching even more of a challenge. Unfortunately these classroom do not have the technology most classrooms have.

At the moment the only way I can display what we are learning up for all to see is through an overhead projector from the 1970's.

Before doing this I must make a overhead on special paper. This method is outdated and does not allow my students to see things in color or to view informational clips or video together as a group. We need to give these students who crave the visual stimulation and support that the current technology offers a chance to learn this way. Special Education classrooms need to have access to an Elmo, just as the regular classrooms. Please help me bring this technology to my students and open up their world of learning with exciting in color visual interactive technology.
