Seeing Is Believing

My Students

Our middle school is located in one of the oldest areas of our city. The west side of Columbus has a rich history that predates Columbus becoming the capital. Many of our students are unaware of the important nature of the history of their community. They have much to be proud of and yet, our area does not often receive the recognition that it should. I want my students to begin to see the value of their community and recognize their important role in it.

Much like the area, teens and preteens can often be underestimated.

No one should ever underestimate my students. They are powerful. They have a voice. They are the change we need in this world.

In addition to performing in our music program, my students are also active in other areas of school and our community. Our group, "We Are the Change" works to support our school and community through area cleanups, weekend food distribution, and amplifying student voice.

My Project

While I wholeheartedly support my district's decision to hold virtual classes through at least the first quarter, it does make student engagement more of a challenge. Teaching requires a connection with students that can be difficult to establish when learning remotely. This can be especially difficult for our students that are learning a new language or who rely on facial cues for better understanding. So much is communicated through facial expressions.

Just hearing a voice can make focusing difficult.

Seeing a face you can interact with, makes learning much more engaging. This monitor will allow me to see every student that chooses to turn on their camera. I will not require students to turn on their cameras, but I will ask to hold occasional individual conferences with students and I will encourage the use of the camera to better interact with the student. This monitor can also be used to split my screen to display music videos and performances, theory lessons, and community building activities.
