My Students

As an art teacher in a Title I school, I serve a diverse group of students. The majority of my students come to school every day carrying stress from their personal lives. These stressors include but are not limited to speaking English as their second language, being afraid in their own neighborhoods, and not having enough food to eat.

Despite the issues they face, these students come to school each and every day, ready to do their best.

The positive attitudes, smiles and hugs given by these students are unlike any other I have worked with. They try their best to succeed and grow with everything they do.

My students are creative, smart, vocal, engaged and determined to flourish. They want to grow up to be artists, teachers, doctors and good citizens. They don’t let anything get in the way of their dreams and I am incredibly lucky to work with such a great bunch!

My Project

My students need to see every step of the art making process. The document camera allows instruction to be broken down into easy to follow steps. Traditionally, students gather around and watch as the art teacher demonstrates how to do the project. This approach can be extremely confusing for students because they are seeing a mirror image of what they need to do rather than seeing the instruction done exactly as they should execute it. The document camera allows students to view the teacher's example exactly as they will see it when its time for them to do it. In previous schools I have used a document camera and all grades from Kindergarten to 5th grade are able to benefit from its use daily.
