My students are energetic 7-9 year old kids with a thirst for learning. Some of them are lifelong Richmond kids, while others are immigrants adapting to a new language and culture. They amaze me every day with curiosity and positivity.
I teach in a high-poverty urban school, but do not see my kids as statistics.
They are resilient despite hardship. When we read Harry the Dirty Dog, I was amazed. They asked, "Did you ever run away? Why'd you go back?" These kids deserve an education that matches their spirit.
For years, I've paid for color printing. The cost never seemed exorbitant - only a few dollars at a time. Then I realized my class would benefit from easier color-printing. I could post vocabulary images to support English Language Learners, and hang more photos of our class being awesome. Frequently however, these images stay hidden on my phone.
For students living in poverty, gaining background knowledge is critical - many have never seen a forest nor traveled outside the city.
Some students have never heard of animals like skunks, and can't imagine habitats like coral reefs. I need colorful images that teach vocabulary. Simply projecting images during a lesson isn't enough. With photos on our Word Wall, kids could absorb knowledge throughout the day. By scanning and printing their work, I could make kids feel like accomplished authors.
After careful research, I'm requesting a color printer and a voice recorder. With this technology, I will display science images in full color. I will record read-alongs that grant access to grade-level texts. The recorder would also improve reading fluency, help struggling writers draft research projects, and translate non-native English speakers' ideas.
