My Students

My students attend a Title I school in a high-poverty area of Florida. I teach two third-grade English Language Arts classes this year. Last year was so tough for all of the students, but in a Title I-funded school, students generally have other needs standing in the way of their education. Third grade is a mandatory retention grade here, so I want to give my students everything they need to thrive. They love being outside and playing in the dirt, so let's use that!

I recently started a garden at our 70 year old school using old abandoned beds,

where the ground is too hard for us to work with our bare hands. I want my students to know that they can grow food using kitchen scraps, seeds, and other sources. Plants to support the ecosystem and pollinators, and more. We just need help with the tools.

My Project

My students have been asking to start a garden in an abandoned set of beds on our 70 year old campus. We were given approval and have begun a recycled foods bed.

Unfortunately, the ground has not been worked in years, and it is very hard for their little third grade hands to work.

We can spend our recess time working in our beds, so we need tools to help the work go faster.

We are hoping that our beds will spread interest to other classes, so we are also asking for seeds so that we can start pollinating them to plant in the spring.
