My Students

Our high school is located on the suburban border of South Sacramento and Elk Grove, which is at the furthest corner of the community we serve. Many of or students ride public transportation or walk several miles to get to school. The local setting makes it difficult for our school to be a part of the community . Our high school is a Title I school and almost all students receive free or reduced-price meals.

My students enjoy learning in ways that are different than normal classroom environments.

We spend our time in class working on computers, in groups, playing games, and sometimes we even work outside! Students in my class are taking Math 1 are a part of our Freshman Voyage program, which is a program to help their transition from middle school to high school. It is difficult to be a Freshman in high school right now with all the transition from distant learning and have lost a lot of confidence in their ability to learn. Students spend the year in my class building up their mathematical confidence by using growth mindset strategies and differentiated methods of learning math.

My Project

After a year of being on computers, my students are ready to do as much off screen learning as they can. Paper assignments can also not be exciting for students.

When student show what they know on white boards, they love the immediate feedback they receive from me when they can show what they know from across the room.

It keeps them excited about their learning and helps students build their confidence. Also, when their write on the whiteboards, it is easier to erase and fix, which helps them stay engaged.
