My Students

Technology is especially important to our students during the school day because many students do not have access to this learning modality at home. Our school is a Title I school located within a large city. The students are eager to learn but come from impoverished homes with limited resources and poor parental support. Many students have not been exposed to a PreK program and thus start school behind other children that have had a variety of experiences before starting formal instruction.

My Project

The hands-on demonstration science activities that I've chosen for my project will be used with multiple classrooms during their Technology Class period. Technology skills, such as keyboarding, research, word processing and coding, will be taught through the subject of Science. Class will begin with an introduction to a science concept and demonstration , followed by group discussion and practice with hands-on activities from the donated kits. The kits I've requested have science activities provided with all necessary equipment to present a concept and then allow students to practice. For example, students will hear a lesson about insects and then use the Magnetic Activity Tins to identify the body parts of an insect or spider. The Activity Cards will allow us to have a demonstration and/or experiment that goes along with the concept being learned that day. Students will then create projects and/or presentations about these topics of science study using their computers as their technology tool.

The donation of science equipment will allow my technology students to view and practice with science concepts before turning this knowledge into a project or presentation, using computers.

It's important to make connections with students between tools for learning and skills or objectives. The Science Discovery Kit provides all the necessary equipment for our classroom demonstrations. The Can Do Discovery Kits provide photo activity cards that will allow students to conduct experiments on their own or in small groups; gaining knowledge that they can then transfer to a word processing project or PowerPoint presentation. By teaching science and technology together, my students will enhance both areas of study.
