Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Second graders are full of curiosity and love to participate in science and engineering! I teach all the UTK-5th grade students in my school, but these supplies are specifically for my second graders. We use Mystery Science to support our enriching science program, which provides videos and plans for hands-on activities, but we need to supply the consumables ourselves. I have already purchased most of what I need, but these items will take us to the end of the year.
Some items, like the candy, will be used to test various melting points and other properties of matter, while other items will help us learn about plant and animal adaptations, and others will allow us to explore erosion.
For example, students will make mountains out of cornmeal and observe the effect of water dripping on it over time. In this way, they will come to understand geologic forms such as canyons. In another activity, they will test materials for softness, stiffness, and absorbency so they can select the best ones to use in designing and engineering a hat that will protect them from the sun.
With your support, I hope to engage students in being active scientists and engineers rather than just learning by reading, listening, and watching videos. Sparking their curiosity, hearing them shout in excitement, and seeing their proud smiles make my job a joy. Thank you for helping me inspire our future scientists!
