My students need to see good math practices. I will use the Magnetic Math Board to model mathematical strategies. The students will use ETA Pattern Block Games and the 4 Way Countdown Games for additional practice.
Students in Math Motion, my class of second graders are in the process of growing in their knowledge of math and the importance of math in our lives. I want them to continue to be motivated to help one another. We continue to work on becoming productive, knowledgeable mathematicians. We welcome, share, and engage in activities that help them use mathematical concepts daily.
Unfortunately, because of their low income and diverse populations, my students do not have good role models or support from home.
Many are incoming immigrants, new to the American way of life. They are needing to be engaged and encouraged in their emotional and academic growth.
My students come from low, income families. Our school area is very diverse. Many of my students have living obstacles that are very hard for their young lives to overcome. We have 58% free and reduced price lunch rate and students with many different languages and academic abilities. My students need to be acclimated to the growing challenges of life.
My Project
The skills levels of my second graders will be enhanced by the use of math manipulatives and games. My students need to be able to understand how numbers work, why it is important to know basic math, and how they will benefit from math. I will model good mathematical practices for them using the magnetic math board. Math is an intricate part of our daily lives. I wish to develop a love and understanding of mathematical concepts that they will carry with them into the next grade levels.
Good quality math games like, "4 Way Math Countdown" and "ETA Pattern Blocks Games" will help build their math sense.
