The students in my class are from a complex portion of South Los Angeles. These students face challenges daily that requires a type of strength not understood by peers in other socioeconomic areas. Their desire for learning is strong, but they also know levels of disappointment and distress that should only be experienced by people beyond their years. My school is listed as one of the lowest performing in our district. It is comprised of students who qualify for free meals, which includes breakfast, lunch, and an after-school snack. We have language learners of two types, English Learner and Standard English Learners. Both groups have their instructional challenges and both groups excel in demonstrating strong aptitudes for instructional mastery.
With this in mind, the students in my school are all-stars and are learning to be brilliant!
It is quite rewarding to experience their academic growth and accomplishments. When their struggles become their triumphs, it not only affects them but their families; as they improve academically, so does their family unit.
Second graders are required to write in all curricular areas. They must be able to express and explain their thinking in Language Arts, Science and Mathematics by providing concrete evidence of their cognition. This task can be difficult for students of this age. Through the usage of the journals requested, they will be able to frequently practice this skill. Students of this age are motivated to use materials that are attractive and meaningful. They need scaffolding that supports their learning and to be able to access resources that do the same. These journals adequately address these stipulations. The usage of these journals will assist me in meeting the needs of my students while engaging them in the rigorous writing they are required to produce.
