My Students
My students are our future medical technicians, pharmacy techs, phlebotomists, nursing assistants, and home health aides. Some might even be doctors and nurses. Our school serves a rural outlying area of 112 square miles. Our island community faces Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) Scores of 12-26, where 26 indicates areas of highest need.
These future heroes want to take care of people in their community.
My school is a Title I school where students are culturally diverse, including native Hawaiian, Filipino, Pacific Islander, Asian, Portuguese, Hispanic, and many others. School data shows that the percentage of students who receive free and reduced-price meals continues to increase each year. Due to the economic background of our community, our school is eligible for federal funding for free lunch and transportation this academic year.
Our students actively participate in various extra-curricular activities such as athletics, Upwardbound, Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), Junior Achievement, AVID, STEMWorks, Girls Who Code, Students Helping Students, FFA, Student Body Government, Robotics, and Cyberpatriot. As their HOSA, AVID, and STEMclub adviser, their enthusiasm and active engagement to improve their family's economic status never ceases to amaze me.
My Project
These seats will allow students to have appropriate seating in my classroom. Half of them are being asked to sit on the side of double desks due to COVID. They will need to write with the desk at their side to avoid facing the other student who can sit with the desk in front of themselves.
Good seating is a basic necessity for learning.
These single desks and chairs will ease the number of students having to write and type in awkward positions. We will be able to avoid having students sit at light tables on uncomfortable stools. These will be a great lesson on how proper ergonomics affects brain and body function.
More than half of students from low‑income households
