"Be the change you wish to see in the World."-Gandhi. Change is an exciting and at times challenging part of Kindergarten. Every child that walks through the door of my classroom in August has undergone change when they walk out in June. As their teacher, I strive to help that change be amazing!
Most of my students speak English as their second language.
I also mainstream students from the school's Special Education classes every day, having children with special needs work side by side with their kindergarten peers. Our school has grown and changed since it opened in 2006. We have had our ups and downs and through all things, we have continued to forge ahead and keep our eyes on learning. As a teacher, I love working with kindergartners. From August through May their minds grow and change tremendously. They develop and change not only physically, but socially and academically. It is amazing to see a student in August struggle to learn how to write his or her name and then in May be able to read stories on their own. They are all amazing and wonderful in their own ways.
My Project
Have you ever tried to sit in the SAME chair all day? When you are 5 years old, sitting in the same spot all day long is IMPOSSIBLE! Young children are excited by learning and enjoy interacting with the learning process. Being excited by learning also means that sitting still for hours is excruciating. Being able to move, change seats, and sit in different locations in the classroom makes the learning process engaging and positive.
Lap desks and stools will give my young students seating options that are varied and portable.
These kinds of seats can be moved around the classroom easily by the students, giving them ownership of the seats that they choose during the school day. These seats also make moving students into small groups around the classroom a quick and easy transition. This will increase time on task, the level of student engagement, and the ability of those who struggle with attention to move around in a safe manner.
My students would be elated by the opportunity to have different options for seating available to them throughout the day. The joy of learning is palpable when young children are engaged in exploration and discovery.
