Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students at our school are strong members of the third ward, historical black community in Third Ward Houston, Texas. They represent a large majority of the diverse, culture-rich African American and Hispanic scholars. My students stem from a majority of low-income households, where many English serves as a second language. My ambitious 9th graders enter the classroom eager to connect through literature and writing, ready to learn to discover and explore.

They love to read about things that relate to them and are eager to take their learning into their community to make a change.

My Project

Flexible seating gives students the option to control their physical environments in which they work best. In other words, with choices, students gain greater flexibility and control of their surroundings giving them the autonomy and comfort to stay engaged and focused. This leads to increased student engagement which is linked to higher motivation and academic performance, as well as improved overall behavior.

100% of my students come from low-income households and receive free and reduced lunch.

Because of this, choice is extremely important in keeping my students engaged in learning and in academics.
