My Students

I teach Second grade in a school that is approximately sixty-five percent Title I. Over half of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes. We have a diverse group of students, including African Americans, Asians, and Hispanic students. My students come with a variety of needs and reading levels.

These children come to school each day ready to learn and with smiles of their faces.

They are excited to read and love having the chance to choose books in our classroom library. They love new books, any opportunity to read, and to share their thoughts.

My Project

My students are expected to be engaged daily in classroom lessons that are rigorous. That doesn't leave much time for students to move around during the day. My classroom needs to be a place where my students' needs come first. For some of my students, this means sitting in non-traditional places in the classroom, where they can choose their seating. Many of my students find it hard to focus on the traditional chairs currently in the classroom. They would love the option of flexible seating to help them keep their focus all day long. By placing stools with storage at my computers, I will open up more room for even more flexible seating options. While using these, they will need a hard surface to write on, such as the lap desks.

By giving my students choices on where to sit, they become empowered and realize their choices can directly affect their learning.

Students will have an option to choose the seating that will best fit their needs during the given task. This will benefit all of the students in my room, especially those with ADHD, by letting them have some movement in their seating and not just sit in a desk and chairs.

The stools will provide seating that is their size, and not in the way while the computers aren't being used.
