My students need comfortable seating for a positive learning environment. I am creating a classroom that feels like "home" in order to eliminate anxiety, stress and frustration through my students' school day.
I teach Health and Physical Education at a STEM Middle School in Savannah, Georgia. STEM education is so much more than the acronym, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We focus on trans-disciplinary teaching, problem based learning, project based learning, and student centered teaching/learning.
Being able to teach outside of the box by exploring creativity is a testament to our amazing student population.
Our school is extremely diverse and exudes a "Love Your People" culture. Being a specialty program, we draw students from all parts of Savannah and it's surrounding areas. Because of our students, we earned STEM certification (first middle school to earn this honor in Georgia), STEAM certification, are a Lighthouse School to Watch, and were named the #1 STEM school in the NATION.
Our students are challenged by seven classes a day, 5+ days a week. They adapt to student centered education and enjoy the problem based learning surrounding the STEM philosophy.
I am certain many of our students are going to find solutions to common, and not so common, issues in our world... it is just a matter of time, and a matter of support provided by amazing donors like you!
My Project
Through my studies, I have learned that students have an increase in learning and positive behavior when they feel safe and comfortable. Witnessing a rise in anxiety levels amongst the middle school ages, I decided to create a classroom full of furniture as opposed to the traditional sterile desks. I have received generous donations from family, friends, and strangers that nearly has my vision complete.
This requested small pub table, stools, and four extra stools will finish my seating needs within two separate areas of my room.
Having my seating complete will allow each student in my class to experience equal seating options. Two weeks into school and I am already seeing positive benefits from making my classroom a "home."
