I am a second-grade teacher in a small town with about 95 percent of the population being Native American. I have been teaching at the Dunseith Public School for 12 years. The majority of my students and their families qualify for free and reduced lunches. We are located near a reservation and the poverty level is high. My students have very limited access to city life. I have purchased many supplies for my students and classroom that encourage them to think outside the box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My Project
I recently moved to a new classroom and the class has no carpeting. I have purchased a few rugs for the my students to sit and read on. There are a few places in our classroom that is still in need of some more quiet reading spots. The two larger rugs will be placed in opposite corners of the classroom and the two smaller rugs will be placed in our creative play area. With the colorful designs on the rugs , the students can choose a noise canceling reading space.
In our second grade classroom we take several breaks to just sit and read, whether its elbow to elbow, flashlight reading, partner reading, or independent.
These styles of reading have helped my students feel relaxed and excited to read. They look forward for Reading Center Time and that excites me as a teacher.
