My Project

This year, I have experimented with a new philosophy of teaching. After reading The Thinking Classroom, I have started to transform my physical classroom space into a flexible learning environment. I need seating that can be easily taken down, put away, and brought out again. For example, during math, I ask students to work in pairs/triads on vertical whiteboards (that also can be stored in corners). They do this standing up, as they work together to solve problems using a myriad of strategies. Students do not use tables or chairs during this time as they show their work on the whiteboard and are expected to be moving around, asking other students questions, learning from each other and building on other people's ideas. Through this experience, students become thinkers, as they have to rely on themselves, their partners, and the group as a whole, to solve problems.

However, during different parts of the day such as reading time, I need to transform my room so that students can sit down and have independent stations.

I want students to come in from recess and have a space that also allows students to sit by themselves and work independently. By having the floor chairs and the stackable chairs, the students can use these when working independently. However, they can also be stored easily when they are not being used, leading to less cluttering up the room. In writing, I need to provide a hard surface for students to use computers and to write stories. Therefore, these flexible seating options allow me to accommodate for different events and give students choices in where to sit.
