These new poetry books have become an important part of our reading and writing workshop, helping students grow as thoughtful readers, writers, and thinkers.\r\n\r\nEach week, we focus on a different poet and study one of their poems closely. Together, we learn how to analyze poetry by looking beyond the literal meaning and discussing what the poet may be trying to convey through theme, tone, imagery, and word choice. We spend time practicing specific skills each week, whether that is studying a figurative language technique such as learning about similes, metaphors, personification, or anaphora, or learning how structure and repetition add meaning to a poem. After studying mentor poems, students then apply that skill by writing poems of their own.\r\n\r\nAlongside this work, we are reading the novels in verse that you provided us with, which has been an incredibly powerful way to deepen student understanding. These texts help students see how authors can use poetry not only to express emotions and ideas, but also to develop character, theme, and a clear plot structure across an entire story. Reading novels in verse has shown students that poetry can tell complete, meaningful stories and connect ideas across chapters just like a traditional novel.\r\n\r\nThis combination of close poetry study and novels in verse is helping students make strong connections between reading and writing. They are learning how authors carefully choose words, use poetic devices to build meaning, and develop themes across a text. In turn, students are bringing those same techniques into their own writing.\r\n\r\nIt has been especially exciting to watch students begin to see themselves as poets and authors. Thank you for helping provide resources that make this kind of rich learning possible. Furthermore, students are really enjoying the novels in verse. Having multiple copies of different titles gives them meaningful choice in what they read, allowing them to pick books that feel interesting and important to them. For some students, these texts have also built confidence, especially for those who may feel intimidated by traditional prose. Novels in verse still tell complete, rich stories with clear plot and character development, but the format feels more approachable and manageable for many readers.","fullyFundedDate":1767213377897,"projectUrl":"project/poetry-lives-here/9899110/","projectTitle":"Poetry Lives Here","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Campbell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3782909_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1471903086175","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mcampbell71"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65640","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":120,"numTeachers":10,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":94,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"2 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":61.9,"schoolId":65640,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ames Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ames Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/rsu-71/ames-elementary-school/65640"}
