Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious, energetic, and eager to please. They display a combination of grit and kindness that is rare in children today. Our school is in urban Oklahoma City, and our class talks daily about dreaming big and working hard to reach these goals--to go far beyond the world many of them have ever known.
Daily, we repeat our class motto, which serves as a reminder that they can go anywhere in life if they do these four things: "Dream Big, Work Hard, Be Kind, Have Fun!"
Even though my school is located in a rough neighborhood, most of my students come from supportive and loving families. At the same time, many have also experienced traumatic or Adverse Childhood Experiences in a variety of forms. Our school is largely composed of bilingual students. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and many receive supplemental food to take home. A lot of our students are transients. My class is diverse, ranging from English newcomers to students on a 6th grade reading level.
My students and I meet the challenges that come every day head on, and we are all incredibly thankful for your support.
My Project
My students are motivated to learn, but full of energy that often makes it hard for them to work in a traditional table-and-chair setting. They also love to have a voice in their learning environment.
Providing them the opportunity to choose their seat for the way they learn best allows them to take ownership of the classroom and their work environment.
Currently my students take turns using our five stools and three pillows, and many sprawl out on the carpet or even the hard floor surface with a clipboard when working. Others prefer to squeeze into corners or stand.
The requested items, including more stools, flexibility bands to put on the bottom of traditional chairs, flexibility cushions, and a reading pillow will allow us more options for students to select the differentiated seating that works best for them. These choices allow them to work while still squirming and wiggling, and help them learn to recognize what type of environment best suits their learning style.
