My classroom consists of two rotating classes. One of the classes consists of eight students and the other class consists of nine students. The students in my classroom vary in age and disability. The age range is twelve to fifteen. The disabilities vary as well. Emotional disturbance, intellectually delayed, autism, hearing impairment and other health impairment are all disabilities you may see in my classroom. Most of my students work on a first to third grade level and require an adequate amount of assistance.
"When people ask, what do you do?
You answer, whatever it takes." As a special education teacher, I am always searching for innovative ways to help my students be successful as well as stay engaged in their learning environments. In a special education classroom, what might work one day, may not work the next and as a teacher you have to be on your toes and ready to find a new way to reach your students.
Having a disability presents its own set of challenges, some of the students in my classroom stem (rock, flaps, tap or fidget) on a consistent basis and often become disengaged in their environment. However, they respond to and enjoy hands-on learning.
My Project
If our project was funded, the flexible seating would assist in helping each student with processing information as well as staying focused. The Zenergy ball chairs would allow each student to move freely and collaborate with their peers all while being comfortable and engaged in their learning environment. Our goal is to create a learning rich environment through an alternative learning experience.
Success, engaging, achieving and teachable to all words that represent our classroom and what we are working towards.
We are striving for success, engaging in our environment, achieving our goals and understanding that every moment is a teachable moment.
