Each morning I stand at the door as my students pour into the classroom. As I greet each student with a high five or handshake, I am reminded of the diversity that is entering my classroom to learn. I am high-fiving 19 students that receive a free or reduced lunch rate. I am giving a handshake to 13 students that are bilingual in nine different languages. I am fist bumping 5 students that have just moved to Washington State or even the United States within the last year.
But no matter their obstacles or differences, I am always greeting 25 students with a strong desire to learn, grow, and build relationships.
And I don't want anything to stand in the way of that. I want each of my students to become avid readers, curious mathematicians, and spirited authors. And with your help, their desire for learning and discovering will only continue to rise.
My Project
My first graders are learning lots of important skills this year. They are learning to add and subtract within 100, how to decode difficult words while reading, and become researchers for their writing projects. They are also learning how to organize all their different materials for easy access throughout the day. In a classroom that does not have desks with storage areas, these seat pockets would allow students to store all their materials where they complete a majority of their work!
These seat pockets would also allow students to better learn how to store and organize their materials, a skill that is important in all areas of life.
They will be used daily by each student in the classroom and allow transitions from each subject to be easier. With a specific area to store supplies, each student can take better ownership of their own materials and spend less time looking for supplies and more time learning.
These storage pockets will really allow students to maximize their learning time while also learning important organizational skills!
