We are currently implementing a new curriculum in our district. We are introducing our children to Readers Workshop which surrounds our children with books that are genuine, authentic literature. The children spend a tremendous amount of time reading from their individual book bags daily.
We are part of an urban school district, bringing many diverse economic and social backgrounds together in a huge melting pot called an elementary school.
Our school is the magnet school in our district, providing Basic Skills services. We are enthusiastically bringing a new curriculum to life as we teach reading and writing through Readers and Writers Workshop. The curriculum encourages reading, surrounding the children with authentic literature and quality books and stories. The children are emersed in reading and writing all day.
My Project
Teaching first grade brings with it many rewarding experiences. Beyond the curriculum we are teaching the children organizational skills, which these chair sacks will help with. As we encourage our children to have books at their desks at all times, putting them on the back of their chairs will literally bring literature to their fingertips with ease. These chair sacks will help keep the books within the children's reach at all times but off the desks of our active and busy first grade age children whose desks are typically covered with their work, projects, scissors or glue!
Our classrooms are not huge by any stretch of the imagination.
As our classroom enrollment increases so do the demands for the limited space. Our new curriculum requires space for reading nooks, corners, chairs, and carpets. Many teachers have book boxes for their students independent reading selections but that requires storage space that is not abundant in our first grade classrooms. We are hopeful that your generosity will help us with our space and organizational issues.
