"Do I get extra credit for neatness? I prepared my report on a laser printer." I would like to provide access to printers, so students can complete 21st century learning.
We are a stellar science department in a low income public high school with 1,300+ students.
Our staff tries to provide college credits at a reduced price or free to our 50% "free and reduced lunch" students. In science, students can receive college credit for taking my Botany I, Botany II, or Anatomy classes. Unfortunately, we have lost our budget and as a result have no funds to purchase technology for the classroom.
My goal is to offer skills and opportunities to students that can be applied to their future. As a college prep teacher, it is my job to ensure that students have access to computers, printers and common technology that they will be using in future jobs, college, personal use, etc.
My Project
We are a striving classroom that continues to move forward in this 21st century and helping prepare students for the future. Students need access to typing, search engines, various programs, and printers to print their final products. One particular program we are looking forward to printing from is REVEALED 2.0. My anatomy students can print and blend cadaver photos; allowing them to peel away layers of the human body to reveal more than 5,000 anatomical structures.
In botany, we want to print a greenhouse seed catalog for our supportive community buyers. My biology class is excited about publishing their personal "survivor" stories in a classroom book. Finally, I can't wait to set up a GPS geocacheing/letterbox lab around our town for everyone to enjoy! The possibilities are endless with wireless...
We just got our first and only class set of mobile laptop computers called the COW, computers-on-wheels.
Also, we now have a few desk computers available in rooms. The wireless printer would allow our students to "communicate" their finished products with students, staff, family, friends, and the community.
