My high school is urban, with a wide variety of students from all different backgrounds, however, more than half come from low-income households. Since we are a Title 1 school, funding for the Arts is not high on the list of the school's budget. Luckily, as an Art Teacher, we excel at creativity, are resourceful and will do anything to get our kids creating again!
Before the world of Virtual Learning, my students were exposed to the variety of materials used create Three-Dimensional Art, mostly consisting of Sculpture and Ceramics; this came to a stop once that pandemic forced us to no longer be "in the studio."
My students love creating Art with their hands and it's such a cathartic experience that they don't really get any where else in their life. Creating sculpture is very therapeutic and my students are missing that experience because they do not have the materials to create sculpture at home. My students need supplies to continue their Arts education in order to start their school year in a meaningful and rewarding way!
My Project
Students LOVE taking Art classes for many reasons, but I feel it's mostly because they have the freedom to be who they are. Self expression and creativity are highly encouraged in Art and students are drawn to that non-restrictive and open minded environment.
Art is a form of communication, and ever since we left school for the global pandemic, students have being missing out on many aspects of school life.
Socialization, whether through Art or other means, is vital for students of this age.
Without proper supplies, students will not receive a thorough education they would have if they were allowed to go to school or "to the classroom studio." They need to be able to "get their hands" dirty again! They need to be able to get creative again! And most importantly, they need to be able to work three-dimensionally again!
Students need to feel therapeutic through Art again during these troubling times.
