Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative and loving. They have joyous personalities and show up each day to learn. The majority of the students are on the autism spectrum and are working to increase their inclusion in general education classes (though they still have some special day classes throughout the week.) In our resource rooms, the students receive individualized attention to support them both socially and academically. In these smaller spaces, they can be themselves, laugh with peers who understand their humor and share their interests.
Our school is small which allows the students in our special education program to be part of a larger, supportive community.
The students participate in grade level activities such as year-long projects, field trips, and internships. While our school offers unique opportunities, it still faces challenges. We are a Title I school in an urban area and our school district is currently experiencing a fiscal crisis. In the middle of this unrest, our staff works hard to create a supportive and safe environment for our students.
My Project
I want to teach my students how to screen print as part of a lesson in social justice. Towards the end of the school year, we will do a 3-week project that incorporates rock climbing, advocacy, and social justice. The students will have a chance to rock climb at indoor climbing gyms coupled with lessons about our need for equity in our currently divided environment. North Face started a campaign titled "Walls were meant for climbing" that aimed at bringing awareness to breaking down borders and other barriers to build tolerance and foster a global community. We want to build upon that message through our own project.
Students will create messages of unity and tolerance to screen print onto t-shirts that they can then wear in the community when we go climbing.
This will start conversations about building understanding and kindness. Our students wearing their designs will be encouraged to engage with others and promote these positive messages for the future.
