Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my school do not have a lot of exposure to art. Most are unfamiliar with art materials, mediums, and simple art making experiences. Sometimes, this can lead to students not understanding or valuing the experiences they can gain in an art class. This year, my students have had the opportunity to experience mediums they have never used before and it has really opened their eyes to the possibilities of art making. I see students enjoying the new techniques they learn, talking about what they're learning outside of the classroom, and being proud of the work they create.
Students are eager to learn more about the different ways art can be created and proud of the work they have done.
My students thrive on experiencing new forms of art, even when there are bumps in the road because they can look at their work at the end of the day and say, "I did that."
My Project
In my art class, students have been learning about printing making by creating their own stencils and screen printing their prints on regular paper. When we first began screen printing, students didn't know what to expect. The idea of a stencil making a print was foreign to them. But once they created that first stencil and saw how the screen printing process worked, my students were hooked. They began to see the possibilities and were eager to do more. Currently, students are using embroidery hoops with a screen to create their prints, which is a great method for small prints. However, for their final project, students are going to create an 8x10 stencil and screen print their first t-shirt.
As a surprise, I want to get students new frames so they can create a design they are proud of and wear their work with pride.
Students at my school are required to wear uniforms, but, as another surprise, I have spoken to the assistant principal and he is going to allow students to wear their t-shirts when they're done. I'm so excited for students to begin creating their stencils for this project and see what amazing designs they come up with for their t-shirts!
