Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a science teacher at an alternative middle school in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Most of my students have social-emotional disabilities and all of the students have not been able to be successful in mainstream regular education schools or classrooms. Many have outside issues to deal with and school is one of the few safe places in their complex lives. I am constantly amazed at their resilience. The fact that they come to school at all can be a victory.
Our ultimate goal is for these students to progress to the point of being able to return to their school districts and be successful.
We work with each student as an individual. Each classroom has a special education teacher and paraprofessional. Each student also receives individual and group counseling sessions.
These students need a very low student-to-teacher ratio in order to be both successful and safe. We have a great team that is dedicated to helping these students. Because these students need a lot of well-trained staff there is little money left over in the budget to properly equip a science room.
My Project
I love the opportunity to offer my students an active and engaging way to learn math with VersaTiles. Most of all, I love that this product is totally screen-free. I use many methods to teach my students math. While there are advantages to online learning tools for students with attention disorders, being on computers can be very distracting. Engaging their minds and bodies at the same time greatly increases focus and thus increases learning and retention.
This product aligns with the 8th grade math curriculum so it will be a great alternative to the standard worksheets and/or computer-based math practice.
I try to make one day a week in my classroom a hands-on learning day. I have created math games and competitions to help keep the students engaged. I look forward to using this product as part of that effort.
