My Students

Our school has a very diverse student population with a variety of ethnicities, backgrounds, and skill levels. This diversity helps create a positive community of welcoming & accepting students. They are highly motivated to learn. Likewise, they inspire and encourage each other while having fun together.

Fifty-seven percent of the students in our school live in low-income households and almost 30% are English Language Learners.

Some of these children don’t have the basic things that many people take for granted and they are consistently grateful when given opportunities to experience new things. For example, on our two recent field trips to the local art museum and county marsh, the tour guides commented that these students were exceptionally engaged and respectful.

My Project

Scrabble is a fun, authentic learning tool that develops many skills needed by today's students. Incorporating Scrabble in my reading classes will obviously improve their language proficiencies in word building and spelling, but playing together will have a positive impact in many other areas as well.

Skills such as flexible thinking, critical thinking, math, teamwork, and communication will all be improved as kids form words and place them on the board in a strategic manner.

Students of all levels will be learning while having fun playing this classic, engaging game in my fifth grade classroom.
