Help me give my students number tiles, listening center headphones, an American History Paperback Library and a Power Tiles Circuit Kit that will help them want to overcome their academic challenges!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The amazingly eager group of fifth graders in my care this year are all over the spectrum in terms of learning levels and abilities. A large majority of them are reading on a 1st grade-2nd grade level and/or performing math skills on level 2-3. My school services the largest housing projects in Selma, Alabama. It takes a great deal of effort to get them interested in the subject matter to begin with. What's even more challenging is "keeping them motivated" through their moments of struggle.
I believe that with immediate access to the right materials at the right time, I will be able to successfully narrow the achievement gap for my young scholars!
My Project
It takes a great deal of effort to get my kids interested in the subject matter. What's even more challenging is "keeping them motivated" through their moments of struggle. When they don't understand, they often want to just give up. "Extra practice" is often the best way to improve, but the practice activities MUST be engaging!
These skills can be practiced independently in fun and interactive ways using the items in my cart.
I have included Reading and Math task cards that will provide hands on practice “outside the books”. The Comprehension and Fluency Cards will provide the individualized daily practice that they need in order to grow. The vocabulary cards, math games, and manipulatives make the kids feel as though they’re just playing games and having fun! The listening center headphones will help me to allow the students more computer time. The “Can Do” Writing and Grammar Activities will help the students overcome writing challenges and hopefully encourage a love for writing. Sadly, many of my Fifth Grade students write on a second or third grade level, and they know it, so they don’t like to try. I believe that with immediate access to the right hands on and engaging materials at the right time, I will be able to successfully narrow the achievement gap for my young scholars!
