Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students primarily come from inner-city urban areas, from hard-working families that do everything they can to further my students' education. My school is an inner-city charter school, with students choosing to come to this school to escape many of the problems they encountered in their neighborhood schools.
The student population is a reflection of the diverse and rich community.
Many students are English Language Learners, bringing to our class a rich bilingual and multicultural perspective. Often, my students do not have the opportunity to travel outside of our city, so we explore the world through literature and books.
My Project
Everyday, my students are reading more and more. Students who have not read a book cover-to-cover in years are finishing books and loving them. Student choice is imperative in the development of this love of reading, so I want to provide my students with the books they want to read. Our school does not have a library, so I strive to have a diverse range of topics represented in my classroom library.
My students want books about sports, a passion for many of my high school students.
This topic is the most requested during my individual reading conference with students, and the high demand for sports books is evident in the long wait lists for existing titles. The requested books will help continue to nurture a love of reading in my students, by engaging my apprehensive readers with a topic that interests them and pushing my voracious readers to grow in their reading lives.
