My Project

I am a K-5th grade, physical education teacher in a diverse, urban school district in snowy Minnesota. I teach over 400, very fun-loving, energetic, and enthusiastic students who enjoy a creative and interactive physical education experience that isn't just focused around athletic ability. My students come from multiple cultural backgrounds and it is my goal to reflect these cultures as well as the interests of my students in this project.

As a physical educator, I try to provide as many creative experiences within my gym and help my students find the fun in being active again, while also seeing themselves in the city.

Scooter city is a maximum activity unit in physical education where students use upper- and lower-body strength and endurance to explore and move around the city on their scooters (cars). Some of the key features in the city are things that the students would see in their community daily, such as: a zoo with many stuffed animals and a play yard that has a pet care and medical station for the zookeepers, a music studio with various instruments (i.e. electric drum set & keyboard, DJ mixer, tambourines, maracas, guitar, etc.), a bakery & coffee shop with an attached genius bar, campground, humane society, flower shop with the help of the “let’s explore flower gardening play set”, sports center, farmer’s market, diner, grocery store, a kickboxing and trampoline park with the help of the reflex bag and trampolines, a post office, construction zone, service station and carwash, and so much more!

The best part is there is an ATM (bank) and students run the city themselves. They use the cash registers to collect money from students when they are purchasing things from the various places. The student workers even get "paychecks" for working in the city.
