SciFi/Fantasy: Bringing Inclusivity and Diversity to Represent My Students

Help me give my students a more inclusive, and immersive reading experience with this modern fantasy novel, THE CITY WE BECAME, written by the most preeminent author in the genres today... N. K. Jemisin!

My Students

My students in Science Fiction and Fantasy class (12th grade English Elective) are an enthusiastic group who have chosen to embrace these genres and explore "strange new worlds" and mythic realms.

The students in our school come from throughout the five boroughs of New York City and represent a cross-section of the various communities, with approximately 65% identified as low income.

A vast majority are first-generation immigrants from throughout the world, all working toward the goal of attending college (99% graduation and college-bound rate), often being the first in their family to do so.

My students are strivers, they are dreamers, and I love working with them!

My Project

While our holdings of Science Fiction and Fantasy titles contain many of the classics in the genres, the titles tend to skew towards white, male authors (with the exception of LeGuin and Atwood). This is one of the most popular Senior English classes!

As a diverse group of NYC students, my students DESERVE to "see themselves" in the literature we read, and THE CITY WE BECAME is a book that not only addresses this issue to a great degree but does so by setting its story within our own communities!

My students will relate well to the characters, social justice themes, and the various settings of the novel because they live and experience this great city on a daily basis.

I apologize that the photo is not of a classroom but of our building, the largest high school in America, but this is due to restrictions on posting student images.
