My students attend a diverse middle school in the south side of San Francisco. They are curious, creative, and thoughtful. One of my favorite things is seeing their eyes light up when they reach an "ah-hah!" moment as they work towards figuring out scientific phenomena. They come to school ready to learn and discover new things through scientific inquiry despite all the hurdles that may come their way. Many of my students' families struggle to make ends meet which is why I find it so important to provide them with anything I can to help them be successful.
I see the future of STEM when I look at my students and they deserve to see that in themselves as well.
Providing them with the things they need to help make science accessible and engaging can help encourage this.
My Project
If my project gets funded, each one of my students will receive a composition notebook that will allow them to record what they are discovering and learning as we progress through our units. The notebooks will be divided into two sections: the first section will be dedicated to the connections they are making through the activities that help them explain different scientific phenomena. The second section will serve as a place to store key terms and concepts. The magazine files will be used to organize all the notebooks in the cabinets. Each one will be used by a table group of four. This will help ensure that they will not get lost so that my students can continuously build on their ideas.
My cardboard magazine files were extremely worn out by the end of the year and one of my students said, "Make sure you get plastic ones next year!"
