My Students

My school is a public magnet urban school located in the city of Pittsburgh. Our school mission is to bring under privileged students in who have the desire and drive to learn but may not have the resources or the proper support to achieve their educational goals. Since opening, our school's motto of, "Dream. Discover. Design" has brought tremendous success. The attention our school has brought has been featured on NPR on several occasions.

The population of the school is characterized by a majority of African American students who want to become college ready upon reaching their senior year of high school.

In order to meet the individual need of our students in school, our school makes it a priority to keep class sizes low. Students from my school usually come from lower income families that may consist of a nontraditional family model (one parent, being raised by grandparents or a brother and/or sister).

My Project

Our school focuses on science and technology. We have one unit in our 8th grade curriculum that help support this theme. The unit is on "Are inventions realized through inspiration or perspiration?' Students read a number of articles and book excerpts however none focus or even mention African American female scientist/innovators, who make up half of my class.

By reading, Hidden Figures, students, specifically my African American female students, will have a role model towards their career aspirations, as well as, a very interested read to use for their book club group.

Students who choose this text for book club will meet once a week to discuss various literary connections based on what we are studying in class. For example: the use of dashes and ellipses, diction and tone, compare/contrast, figurative language, comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs, as well as many others.

Multiple students requested to read a book about African Americans. I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to read based on what they requested.
