Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 6th grade Bilingual Math and Science teacher in a low income district. 99% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and for many school is the only source of pride in their lives.
Science is an integral part of the future of America. Engaging low income students is often challenging in Science as students in 6th grade have a difficult time understanding abstract concepts. Coupled with this are English Language Learners that need extra visual support and hands on activities. I have three microscopes I use as a station in my classroom, but I am only provided with 5 prepared slides for the entire curriculum. All of my students are absolutely excited and amazed to discover the world through a microscope. To them it is pure magic!
By having a larger assortment of slides it allows me to utilize my microscopes year round and hook my kids on science and school. Students are able to continually work on observation skills and become familiar with scientific tools. This would also allow me to progress to having them mount their own slides.
I have brilliant students that are excited to explore and learn. The only problem they face is that they were not born into a middle class family and have to attend a school with limited resources. As a biologist, I am passionate about providing my students with the same opportunities as those afforded to richer school districts.
