I love the school where I work, here at Maplewood Elementary we have a diverse student body, and we try to address all of our students' needs. There is one particular need, however, that is not overlooked, but I feel could use better and newer resources. Our Spanish-speaking children could and deserve newer and more exciting non-fiction reading materials. In order for third graders to move to the fourth grade they need to pass the TAKS reading test, which is laden with non-fiction texts and vocabulary. Even though, children are provided with non-fiction reading material, Spanish readers, unfortunately, do not have the same level and type of selections that English readers enjoy. This is why I am asking the Donors Choose community to support my idea that reading is fun and interesting in the Spanish language. The following books will equally enrich our classroom library and the young readers who will engross in the adventure and wonderments of outer space, reptiles. These books will introduce rich and complex vocabulary in a fun way. Children will read, study the pictures, and connect this new information to TAKS reading?thus addressing several learning styles.
