Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 25 first grade students from diverse backgrounds.
Our wonderful school is located in sunny Southern California.
My students range from gifted and talented to below grade level. We are proud to be a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence and have won many prestigious awards. Since we are not a Title I School, funding extra projects is very difficult. We need a computer and subscription to Science 4 Us to promote common core science and reading skills during computer lab and center time.
My Project
The Science4Us website was specifically designed for First graders and follows the 5E instructional model. Engage, Explore and Explain, are each represented by an online activity as well as an offline activity, followed by multiple Elaborate activities designed to provide cross-curricular opportunities for students to extend and broaden their knowledge and understanding through new experiences. An assessment or exam is also available in this course. I know my students would enjoy learning about the planets through a video presentation. Activities can be played multiple times to allow students to discover connections on their own and reinforce connections through repetition.
Science is so important, but in reality I have limited resources to teach the core curriculum.
The Science4Us website is diverse with interesting activities that would engage my young students. Students will practice reading and math skills as they study about animals, plants, outer space, and physical sciences. My students also need a desktop computer to replace our outdated desktop that is running windows XP. At this time most computer programs cannot run anymore on this old system. A new laptop would enable students to practice reading skills with the Lexia Core5 reading program. Students would also use the Reflex math internet program to master basic addition and subtraction facts. Finally,
I am requesting 10 clipboards to use during small groups and ELD classes. During centers, students in my small group sit on our carpet. A clipboard would give them a hard surface to write on while holding their papers in place. Thank you for considering our project!
