Science Unit - Healthy Living

I teach a special day classroom for students with autism. Our classroom is located in a high-need urban community in California. My students are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.

Our special education staff members have developed a standards-based science curriculum that involves a different unit each month. One of our monthly units is entitled "Healthy Living". We teach our students the many things they need to do each day to keep their bodies and brains healthy. One important aspect of this science curriculum is encouraging our students to enjoy physical activity. For many students with autism this can be a difficult task. My students often find regular sports game to be overwhelming, and lack the communication skills to play along. We would like to develop activities in the classroom that will help our students to be physically active.

We would like to purchase a Nintendo Wii and Balance Board so that our students can participate in enriching physical activities. Computer games are typically extremely motivating to students with autism. The interactivity of these games would allow them to learn to play with a friend while being physically active. This would be a wonderful supplement to our science curriculum, and would allow our students to learn the importance of keeping their bodies healthy while having fun.
