Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk into my classroom, you will see my students working in pairs, in small groups and there is definitely a buzz. You will see students working on Chromebooks, iPad minis, and even personal smartphones. My students are used to using many different modalities to demonstrate their understanding. More than half of the students in our school come from low-income homes.
My students are a group of seventh and eighth graders who are English-language learners and Spanish-language learners.
They have been learning in both languages since kindergarten in our school, which is a K-8 grade school model.
My Project
A few years ago a group of my students wrote a student-led project on DonorsChoose to get new science tables for their classroom. They asked for ten tables, but for some reason, which I don't remember, we ended up with eight. The two tables we kept are old and almost all are broken. They cannot be repaired, and are falling apart. It is dangerous for us to move them around. The tops are heavy slate, and the legs are beyond repair.
My students need stable tables in order to perform math and science lab work in our STEM classroom.
In their project, they wrote, "If we get the tables funded, we will not only have new and safe tables for our classroom, but they will be there for years to come. It will be our legacy." Help me continue to work toward achieving their desires and keep their legacy going!
