My Project

Every year teachers take stock of their classrooms and figure out what new supplies and resources could be used to really refresh the learning in their room. When I started, my room was empty. Although I've borrowed materials here and there when possible, there are some materials my room needs available all the time to make sure our unique activities are possible.

As a local biology and ecology focused classroom, having collection and labeling tools will really help when looking into plant adaptations and will allow students to take charge in doing local ecology research.

Stocking an empty science room is hard, especially when there's so many potential projects to do. One activity I loved seeing in my mentor's classroom was her dissection lessons. Students dissected locally caught seafood from grocery stores. Because their dissection kit was kept away from the chemicals in typical dissection specimens, students were able to cook their samples. The students were able to have one lesson in anatomy and physiology, and another in food prep and cooking. With a dissection kit of our own, we could do similar lessons!

Regardless of what activities we're doing, students often come to class without breakfast or lunch. Having snacks available for my students has been something I've done since Day 1, and often comes out to $100 a month. I have requested breakfast biscuits, breakfast bars, nut bars, and oatmeal squares to store in my classrooms so my students always have food available, even if I have a busy weekend and can't buy them new snacks.
